Frequently asked questions

Windows don't move when I press a shortcut

Panehand moves windows through its companion shortcut. Open the Shortcuts app and check that a shortcut named Panehand exists; if not, choose Add Panehand Shortcut… in Panehand's menu and follow the setup. Also check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation: Panehand must be allowed to control Shortcuts Events.

I have several Panehand shortcuts

The Shortcuts app keeps the old copy when you add an updated shortcut, even if you choose Replace. Panehand uses the newest one and deletes the older copies right after the update; the Shortcuts app asks you to confirm. You can also delete them yourself in the Shortcuts app.

Which window ends up on top?

The order of the apps in a layout is the stacking order: the app at the top of the list lies on top when windows overlap. Drag an app by its handle to change it.

An app in my layout is skipped

Panehand only arranges apps that are running. The menu shows which apps were not running when you applied the layout.

A window doesn't get the exact size

Some apps have a minimum window size or resize in fixed steps. Panehand places the window as close as the app allows. Full-screen windows are skipped.

How do I create a layout quickly?

Arrange your windows by hand, then in Settings → Layouts add each app. Panehand captures the current position automatically. Use “Use Current Position” to update it later.

Can I move my layouts to another Mac?

Yes. Use Export Layouts… in Settings → General and import the file on the other Mac.

Does Panehand work with multiple displays?

Layouts currently use the main display. Snap shortcuts work on the display the active window is on. Full multi-display layouts are planned.

Is Panehand free?

Yes. You can leave an optional tip via Support Panehand… in the menu. Tips don't unlock features.
